In 2023, the number of road deaths among (light-)moped riders (including speed pedelec and microcar [i]) amounted to 32; that is 5% of the total number of road deaths in the Netherlands in 2023 (684). From 2014 to 2023 the number of road deaths among (light-)moped riders fluctuated a little, with some sharp increases and decreases, as shown in Figure 5.
A breakdown by moped and light moped is only possible for road deaths recorded in the police registration (registered numbers in BRON [ii]). This registration shows that the number of road deaths among light-moped riders decreased in 2023. By contrast, the number of deaths among moped riders increased in 2023. In most years, fewer crashes are registered by the police than appear in the road death statistics of Statistics Netherlands. In 2023, this is not the case, so suddenly there is no underregistration in BRON. There is no explanation for this striking discrepancy with previous years.
Over a third of the road deaths registered in crashes involving light mopeds are aged 60 or older (37%), an equal share are aged 30 or younger (35%). Four in five of the road deaths registered in crashes involving (light) mopeds are male (80%).

In 2022, the estimated number of serious road injuries among (light-)moped riders amounted to 900 (MAIS3+ [iii]; see Figure 6); making up 11% of the total number of serious road injuries in 2022 (8,300). Since 2015, the number of serious road injuries has remained roughly the same, to increase in 2022. One-third of serious road injuries among (light-)moped riders involve young people up to age 29 and likewise one-third are aged 60 or over. Three-quarters of casualties are male. For serious road injuries, a breakdown by moped and (light-)moped riders is not possible.

Figures on road users who end up in the Accident and Emergency department (A&E) after a crash show a similar share of (light-)moped riders in the total number of injuries; in the period July 2020 - June 2021, 11,500 (light-)moped riders ended up in A&E. This was 10% of the total number of road casualties in A&E [8]. A survey among 500 of these (light-)moped riders showed that just over half were moped riders.
[i] In the road death statistics (Statistics Netherlands), microcars and speed pedelecs are registered as mopeds based on their registration plates, and road deaths among microcar or speed pedelec users - several deaths per year - are counted among moped riders.
[ii] In BRON, speed pedelecs are registered as mopeds as well, and the moped category includes several speed pedelec casualties per year. Microcars are registered in BRON under a separate category.
