A study by SWOV-researchers Dr Teun Uijtdewilligen, Dr Gert Jan Wijlhuizen and Dr Matin Nabavi Niaki, based on a workshop held at the 11th ICSC (International Cycling Safety Conference) in The Hague, has shed light on the critical design elements that contribute to the safety of bicycle streets. Bicycle streets, a relatively new type of cycling infrastructure where bicycle traffic is prioritized and motorized vehicles are limited in volume and speed, are becoming increasingly popular. However, research on their safety has been limited until now.
This study provides valuable insights and directions for future research on the safety of bicycle streets, emphasizing the need for more targeted studies to faciliate the development of guidelines for the safe implementation of bicycle streets.
All contributions to Vol. 7: Special volume ‘11th International Cycling Safety Conference’ of Traffic Safety Research were handled by guest editors Dr Ragnhild Davidse (Department head Human Behaviour in Traffic, SWOV) and Professor Arend Schwab (Delft University of Technology).
