In many major cities around the world, including those in the Netherlands, cycling numbers are increasing. At the same time, these cities are seeing an increase in serious road traffic crashes that involve cyclists. Teun’s dissertation aims to enhance the understanding of how increasing cycling volumes in urban areas impact both the objective and subjective safety of cyclists. His research examines the relationship between cycling volumes, motorised vehicle volumes, and the incidence of serious injuries and fatal crashes in the four largest Dutch cities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, and The Hague). In addition, cycling infrastructure types, speed limits, network structure, and the built environment are considered as well.
