Abstract

Several early reports from the USA on the effectiveness of the "energy absorbing" steering column were encouraging; but more recent work, both in Britain and the U.S.A., tends to indicate that the existing legislation is producing little benefit for the unrestrained driver. The paper surveys this work. And considers the suggestions which have been made to explain this lack of benefit.
