Abstract

This paper summarises the injury criteria proposed for car occupant protection at the time of writing. The development of the head injury criterion (H.I.C.) over recent months is discussed in relation to the underlying biomechanical justification. A sample of frontal impacts involving front seat occupants wearing seat belts is reviewed in relation to the equivalent barrier speeds of the collisions.
