Abstract

The equations of the motion of a bicycle are presented an the stability criteria for a certain type of a bicycle as a function of the speed is discussed. The study also includes a mathematical model in which the rider is connected with the bicycle fixed and rides with hands-off. It is possible to study changes in stability limits by changing just one special property of the bicycle. In this way the author concluded, that when low speed stability is required, the moment of inertia of the front wheel around its axis should not be too small as well as the moment of inertia around the steering axis of the front wheel - handle bars configuration should be as small as possible.
