This chapter describes the final phase of a project carried out in Arizona to develop the Truck Operator Performance System (TOPS) to detect fatigue in truck drivers. The final phase of the project involved controlled tests to determine the correlation between performance on the TOPS and actual driving simulator performance. Over four days 20 truck drivers were subjected to a driving task and side task. Details are given of the route provided and the data collected. Six of the subjects were also fitted with physiological measurement devices. The results are discussed, in particular steering control, speed control and the divided attention capacity of the drivers. A good correlation was found between TOPS, simulator performance and physiological data. For the covering abstract see C 45915 (IRRD 876074).
