Abstract

During the 1980s a large amount of alcohol related legislation was introduced in France. Nevertheless, the legal innovation of introducing random checks in 1978 and the strenghtening of the legal restrictions in 1983 in combination with an alcohol level testing have improved the discipline of some drivers but have led to no radical change. Thus in view of the persistent nature of the problem, studies were carried out during the 1980s in order to gain an understanding of drivers and their habits and thereby gain a clearer picture of the nature of the association between alcohol and driving in social context of driving.
