Abstract

With the co-operation of the local constabulary, a survey has been carried out of motor vehicle drivers and riders involved in accidents in nottinghamshire over a twelve month period commencing february 1986; particular attention was given to drivers/riders found to be over the legal limit. Details of accidents in which they were involved were also collected, together with the results of screening and evidential breath tests. Completed questionnaires were returned from 1043 drivers/riders, 189 of whom had recorded a positive evidential breath/blood test. This report summarises the social background and driving experience of respondents, their pattern of drinking and driving immediately before the accident, and their general drinking habits, expressed in terms of their recorded breath test result. Further analyses, to be reported at a later date, will expand upon this preliminary report.
