The author discusses the increased incidence of the involvement of cannabis and other illicit drugs in serious road accidents in Western Australia and considers the possibility of developing countermeasures. Statistics are provided for drug related accidents. Details are given of laws relating to testing drivers for alcohol and other drugs and the penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Road fatality data on drug involvement has been collected in Western Australia since 1990 and the feasibility of establishing a national database is being considered. Areas where further investigation is needed into drugs and driving are listed. For the covering abstract see C 45915 (IRRD 876074).
