Abstract

The authors trace trends in the transit industry from the early 1900s to the present. They found that governmental regulatory and antitrust actions have exacerbated declining ridership trends and reduced transit industry's ability to adopt new technology. The industry's foundation in a fixed route system has also been a contributing factor in the lack of innovation in services offered.
