Abstract

THE FIRST PART OF THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE MOBILE BARRIER SIDE IMPACT TEST PROCEDURE BASED ON THE 1972 ECE DRAFT REGULATION. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE BARRIER MASS, IMPACT SPEED, AND SIZE OF IMPACTING FACE. THE FRONT DUMMY USED WAS A FULLY INSTRUMENTED TRRL SIDE IMPACT DUMMY RESTRAINED WITH A STANDARD 3-POINT BELT. THE REAR DUMMY WAS UNINSTRUMENTED AND UNRESTRAINED. FOUR TYPES OF CAR WERE USED IN THE TESTS. TEST RESULTS ON HUMAN TOLERANCE ARE GIVEN FOR EACH TYPE OF CAR. THE SECOND PART DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LOAD MEASURING RIGID BARRIER AND ITS USE IN A PROGRAMME OF TESTS ON 12 CURRENT PRODUCTION CAR MODELS BEING UNDERTAKEN FOR TRRL BY MIRA. THESE TESTS ARE INTENDED TO INVESTIGATE (1) THE SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION OFFERED TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THESE CAR MODELS AND (2) THE PROBLEM OF ACHIEVING COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN THE DESIGNS OF CAR FRONTS AND CAR SIDES TO MINIMIZE SIDE IMPACT INJURIES.
