Abstract

A MAJOR FEATURE OF THE UPGRADE OF SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION IS THE INTRODUCTION OF A MOVING BARRIER TEST. THIS TEST WILL CONSIST OF STRIKING A SUBJECT VEHICLE IN THE SIDE WITH A MOVING DEFORMABLE BARRIER. THE IMPACT POINT, VELOCITY AND RELATIVE ORIENTATION OF THE SUBJECT VEHICLE AND BARRIER WILL BE REPRESENTATIVE OF ACCIDENT CONDITIONS THAT HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY TO ACCIDENT VICTIMS. THIS PAPER PRESENTS A METHODOLOGY FOR EVALUATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INJURY REDUCTION AND THE WEIGHT OF SUCH A BARRIER. (A) FOR THE COVERING ABSTRACT OF SECTION 5 SEE IRRD 266063.
