The standard introduction of the eCall-function in new vehicles from 2018 onwards will enable the rapid detection of emergencies in vehicles throughout the entire road network. This is intended to improve the response times of rescue services. In addition to the automatically initiated telephone connection, a data record with information about the vehicle and the location is sent to the rescue control centres.
This research report contains the current status of the existing framework conditions of eCall as well as a study on the feasibility and implementation of the use of eCall-data in traffic management. In addition to a topic-specific literature evaluation on the eCall-system, the study was primarily based on a discussion of the existing technical and organisational framework conditions in traffic management and incident management. This was accompanied by a wealth of background information from interviews with responsible persons from traffic centres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, system manufacturers of eCall-solutions and traffic information services as well as contact persons from national and international research initiatives.
