Abstract

In cold snowy areas, road salt is applied in winter to deice the road surface. Although road maintenance costs need to be reduced, the amount of road salt applied has increased year after year due to the increasing demands by road users and providers of road transportation services. Therefore, road salt needs to be applied appropriately and effectively based on meteorological and road surface conditions to ensure the safety of road users. A survey was conducted on the salt concentration on iced road surfaces to identify the relationship between changes in salt concentration, conditions of the road surface, and coefficient of sliding friction, and thus to find an efficient method of applying road salt by controlling the salt concentration. The study showed that by monitoring and controlling the road surface temperature and the concentration of salt remaining on the surface, the amount and interval of salt application could be optimized to keep the road surface in good condition.
