In October 1998 and March 1999, the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research and police control teams carried out a study into the use of alcohol by drivers at the Dutch island of Tholen, in the province of Zeeland. The aim was to establish the motorists' alcohol consumption in this province. Blood alcohol content (BAC), age and sex of the drivers were collected and recorded. Gender, age and the BAC level was recorded of every participant. Of offenders, places of origin of the offenders were also collected and recorded. The study was carried out on Friday and Saturday nights. The collected data were analysed using the Weighted Poisson Model (WPM). The sample included 614 motorists. Comparisons are made with the results of the rest of the Dutch province of Zeeland (obtained in the Fall of 1998) and the whole Netherlands.
