Abstract
This synthesis is an introduction to the important problem of serious injuries in road traffic crashes. It discusses what is meant by serious injury; discusses key factors and how we might make better progress towards preventing and mitigating costly humanitarian and socio-economic outcomes; and reviews key activity to date as well as briefly outlining recommended action at EU and national levels.
