Abstract

This publication provides a synthesis of results of completed European and national research projects related to the them of equity and accessibility. The first part includes a brief overview of the scope of the theme and summarises the main policy developments at EU level relevant to the theme. The second part contains a synthesis of the main findings and policy implications from research projects and identifies the implications for further research. The equity objective is concerned with ensuring that the impacts of transport strategies are reasonably equally distributed, or are focused particularly on those with special needs. The transport system has to ensure that accessible provision is made for all people. Increased 'ease of reaching' different locations and transport facilities is also important. Efficient connections between cities and neighbouring regions, as well as the urban and interurban networks, and the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) are considered essential. An important conclusion is that measures and policies to improve accessibility should not be viewed in isolation.
