Abstract

Road maintenance result in safer roads. Its effects on road safety are calculated for each maintenance operation: improvement of geometric characteristics and installation of street furniture. The results of surveys, in the form of interviews with drivers before during and after a journey, are combined with technical data for studying improvements of whole itineraries. The idea of reference speed is applied in the construction of new roads, but this notion is not always very pertinent when improving existing roads, for which the notion of project speed is currently being promoted in France.
