Abstract

The CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) advisory speed project designed to introduce a driver advisory speed system as an addition to existing traffic control systems is described. Details are given o f: algorithm development, discrete vehicle simulation, the two road experiments undertaken to reach optimum control of traffic signals, and network simulation. The operating conditions, driver behaviour, and safety and environment benefits derived from the application of the system are discussed together with the development of future systems.
