Abstract

The Transportation Research Board in 1986 initiated a study on the mobility and safety needs of older persons. It convened a panel of experts to review the design and operation of the surface transportation system and to recommend improvements that better serve an aging population. As part of the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1987, Congress asked for "a comprehensive study and investigation of (1) problems which may inhibit the safety and mobility of older drivers using the Nation's roads and (2) means of addressing these problems." The response to this request, which emphasizes older drivers, is included in this report, which considers the mobility and safety needs of older drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Volume 1, contains an executive summary, background perspectives, an outline of the report, and the report presented under the following headings: demographics and travel trends; safety of older persons in traffic; aging and performance; and summary and recommendations. Volume 2, contains the following papers: Significance of Mobility for the Well-Being of the Elderly, F.M. Carp; The Mobility Needs of the Elderly, S. Rosenbloom; Renewal Licensing of Older Drivers, P.F. Waller; Driver and Pedestrian Training, A.J. McKnight; Improving Safety for Older Motorists by Means of Information and Market Forces, D.E.
