Abstract

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SYSTEM DESIGNED TO PROVIDE DETAILS OF ACCIDENT TYPES BY LOCATION OF ACCIDENTS. ACCIDENT TYPES ARE CATEGORISED ACCORDING TO THE 'ROAD USER MOVEMENT' FOR ROAD USERS INVOLVED IN THE INITIAL EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT. THE LOCATION OF THE ACCIDENT IS DESCRIBED BY THE CODE OF THE INTERSECTION WHERE THE ACCIDENT OCCURS AT AN INTERSECTION OR BY TWO INTERSECTIONS WHERE THE ACCIDENT OCCURS BETWEEN INTERSECTIONS, I.E. MID-BLOCK. BY MERGING INFORMATION OF ACCIDENT LOCATION AND ACCIDENT TYPE IN A COMPUTER DATA BASE SYSTEM, A USEFUL TOOL IS AVAILABLE TO TRAFFIC ENGINEERS, TRAFFIC PLANNERS, TOWN PLANNERS, ROAD DESIGNERS, RESEARCHERS AND OTHERS IN OBTAINING DATA ON ROAD ACCIDENTS AND USING SUCH DATA IN DESIGNING ACCIDENT COUNTER-MEASURES AND MEASURING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SUCH COUNTER-MEASURES. (A). FOR THE COVERING ABSTRACT OF THE CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS SEE IRRD ABSTRACT NO. 226354.
