Samenvatting

The two most recent federal transportation acts have emphasized multi-modal and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications in offering travelers mobility alternatives. Historically these strategies have been deployed as two discrete initiatives. The purpose of this paper is to develop a "Smart Multimodal Center" (herein referred to as Smart Center) concept that combines the attributes of both "multimodal" and "ITS" programs. The Smart Center will provide improved traveler information, traffic management, parking information, carpool matching and more convenient fare collection for users of the facility. These ITS components would be integrated in conjunction with phased deployment of the regional ITS infrastructure.
