Samenvatting
The basic principles of the perception process are investigated. It appears that silhouette viewing occurs also under daylight viewing conditions. The effects of visibility on braking distance and road safety compels to increase the lighting standards to a degree that reaction time no longer is effective. The distance at which integral viewing changes to silhouette viewing should be larger than the braking distance of the vehicle at top speed. Conditions for clear silhouette viewing are discussed.
