Samenvatting

Camera-monitor systems (CMS) use cameras attached on the right and left side at the same height as the exterior mirror. Instead of observing the rear traffic situation with the help of conventional exterior mirrors, it is displayed on one or more monitors mounted on the inside of the vehicle. One of the supposedly advantages of the use of CMS is the improved vehicle aerodynamics, which goes hand in hand with a potentially lower fuel consumption and lower noise emissions. Another advantage is the possibility of positioning the monitors anywhere in the vehicle cabin. This survey, elicited in three partial studies, which positioning represents the most pleasant and at the same time the safest implementation in comparison to the exterior mirror. A total of four monitor positions were examined in the partial studies: left and right on the A-pillar, in the middle of the vehicle in front of the centre console, in front of the interior mirror or centrally in front of the speedometer (instrument cluster). The camera images were then displayed either on two separate monitors from the left and right outdoor cameras or both images were fused and displayed on one monitor. Differences between these positions and the exterior mirror with regard to psychological aspects (e.g. the stress when using the system) and objective measurements such as the object recognition time were recorded. Familiarisation effects during repeated journeys as well as distance and speed assessments using the CMS were also investigated. Important insights were gained in particular on the positioning of the monitors. The display of the rear traffic situation in the instrument cluster was favoured by the test persons. This positive assessment was also supported by the objective data collected. For example, only for this monitor position an object detection time equivalent to that of an exterior mirror could be measured. The participants were slower with all other positions. In conclusion, concrete recommendations for action are made based on these findings. (Author/publisher)
