Samenvatting

The paper discusses whether allowing a left-turn against a red light at traffic signals, having given way to other vehicles and pedestrian, should be introduced in this country. The results of studies in the United States for right-turn-on-red are reviewed, and differences between American and British traffic engineering conditions considered. It is concluded that, despite less favourable conditions, positive net benefits could be obtained, and that a practical trial is the only sure way to assess the full value of the rule.
