Full-scale trials of pervious macadam laid on A38 Burton bypass in 1984 are described. The objective of the trials is to compare the performance of a number of proprietary and non-proprietary materials made with a range of polymer-modified and unmodified bitumens. An experimental binder drainage test was used to specify the target binder contents. Analysis results show that generally binder drainage was not a problem; good control of both mixing temperature and binder content at the plant helped to ensure the successful laying of the trial materials.
