Samenvatting

The author describes a study which examined the characteristics of road accidents where fatigue was a factor. Drivers who had had an accident or near accident were interviewed over the telephone about various aspects of their journey. Questions covered a) trip purpose, b) who they were travelling with, where to and when, c) fatigue prevention measures and risk behaviour, d) driving time and e) knowledge about driver fatigue and awareness of advertising. The results are discussed. Most accidents occurred at night and after five hours of driving although many were a lot sooner. Of particular interest was the fact that although drivers were aware of the risk of fatigue they did not act to avoid it. For the covering abstract see C 45915 (IRRD 876074).
