In many large cities around the world, cycling volumes are increasing. At the same time, these cities are experiencing a growing number of cyclists being involved in serious road traffic crashes. Therefore, this thesis investigates the relationship between increasing cycling volumes in urban areas and objective and subjective road safety of cyclists. In addition, motorised vehicle volumes, cycling infrastructure types, speed limits, network structure, and the built environment are also considered. To capture short-term variation in traffic volumes and bicycle crashes, hourly estimates of exposure are used as well as hourly precision in the occurrence time of bicycle crashes.
