How fast do light mopeds travel?

Answer

The official maximum speed of light mopeds is lower than that of mopeds, as a helmet is not required for light-mopeds riders. However, the actual speed of the light moped is often higher than the maximum allowed speed of 25 km/h. The actual speed is often close to 35 km/h, the speed at which criminal proceedings are taken if it is measured on the dynamometer. Measurements of the Dutch Cyclist’s Union on rented light moped scooters show that they can often travel at a speed of 35 to 40 km/h [9]. A 2010 study in The Hague, Woerden and Apeldoorn [10] showed that light mopeds travelled at an average speed of 34 km/h; about 20% even travelled faster than 40 km/h. Measurements in 2012, 2013 and 2014 in Amsterdam showed that light-moped riders travel at an average speed of 31 km/h and that about 74% of light-moped riders exceed the maximum speed of 25 km/h [11].
