Mandatory contour marking for all European trucks?

At an ETSC meeting in Brussels on 12 January, Henk Stipdonk presented SWOV's vision on mandatory retroflective contour marking on all trucks, also on the existing vehicle fleet.

There is still much to improve in road safety in the Netherlands. The number of serious traffic injuries is increasing and the cities in particular threatens to get congested. The self-driving car could also cause new safety problems.

SWOV studies often require large amounts of data on the conditions during traffic participation, e.g. movements of the vehicle, the condition of the road user and the traffic conditions he or she is in. Many of the measuring devices that are used share the same basis.

Progress on reducing road deaths in the EU slowed to just -0.6% last year, the worst annual reduction since the first common EU target was set in 2001, according to new analysis published today by the European Transport Safety Council.
Memorandum of Understanding between iRAP en SWOV

At the EuroRAP General Assembly which was held in April 2015 in Reykjavik, SWOV's managing director Peter van der Knaap and iRAP CEO Rob McInerney signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which makes SWOV an iRAP Centre of Excellence.
Heather Ward and Henk Stipdonk to co-chair ETSC Road Safety Performance Index programme
