Abstract

In 1979/80 a survey of vehicle free speeds in urban areas was undertaken by State and Territory Authorities for the Advisory Committee on Road User Performance and Traffic Codes (AGRUPTC) . The survey measured free speeds of cars and derivatives, trucks and other vehicles on a wide spectrum of roads in the capital cities of the 6 states and in the Australian Capital Territory. The report describes the scope and methodology of the survey, summarises the main survey results and draws preliminary conclusions regarding urban free speeds and speed limits across Australia.
