Abstract

In 1983, average speeds of vehicles on New Yorks highways continued to rise. The average speed of all observed vehicles was up 1.4 mph to 55.9 mph; this followed an increase of 1.0 mph in the preceding year. The highest mean speeds occur, as would be expected, on facilities with control or access. The largest increase by highway group was 2.4 mph on urban arterials.
