Abstract

Preliminary estimates for 1983 U.S. traffic fatalities are presented. All statistics were obtained from FARS. During 1983, an estimated 42-500 persons died on US highways. The figure is 3% below the total traffic fatalities for 1982 and 17% below the total for 1980. For the nation as a whole, the combined total of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities decreased by 8%, while vehicle occupant fatalities decreased by less than 3%.
