Abstract

After discussing the organisation and results of the Great Electric Car Race(1968) and the Clean Air Race(1970, the Urban Vehicle Design Contest held at the General Motors proving ground in August 1972 is described. More than 60 student teams from colleges and universities throughout the United States entered a competition for a vehicle best suited to an urban environment and designed to be safe and low polluting. The organisation of the competition is described. Various features of individual entries, their evaluation and the overall scoring are discussed.
