Results are presented of interviews held by the Dutch Institute for Road Safety Research SWOV during the years 1971-1977 on the presence and use of safety belts. The interviews with car drivers were held at petrol stations both inside and outside built-up areas. During the period the introduction of the mandatory presence of safety belts per 1-1-1971 and the introduction of the mandatory use of safety belts per 1-6-1975 took place. By means of data presented the influence of these legal measures on the presence and use of safety belts is studied. The report consists of two parts. Part I discusses the results of the interviews and in part II tables and graphs are presented.
