Abstract

This study investigates whether it is possible to determine which roads have the most accidents in the Dutch municipality of Apeldoorn by using both the same traffic data and a comparable procedure used for environmental problems. The "traffic environment map" is an automated procedure for finding out the environmental problems in terms of noise and fumes of a present or future road network. The study describes the first phase of the "traffic safety map" project conducted for Apeldoorn. The study calculates the safety level of some variants of the Apeldoorn road network by using national indicators. The study shows that a "traffic safety map" can be initiated. The results give a positive answer to the research question.
