Abstract

A series of studies is presented which deals with the nature of memory representations of visual patterns. The stimulus materials which were used were generated as follows: a prototype was chosen consisting of a spatial configuration of forms and then transformations were applied to this prototype to generate other configurations forming a set of instances of a pattern. Findings were interpreted as supporting a characterization of the acquired memory representations in terms of a schema composed of a prototype and transformations.
