Abstract

The 4th International Symposium is built upon the success of the 1st Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts, USA (1995), the 2nd Symposium in Mainz, Germany (2000), and the 3rd Symposium in Chicago, Illinois, USA (2005). These meetings were attended by participants representing 35 countries. The symposia proved that design practitioners, policy makers and researchers worldwide faced similar issues and that they could learn much by sharing their challenges and successes with concerned colleagues. The aim of the Symposium is to stimulate the continuous improvement in different areas of highway geometric design. It focuses on the latest investigation lines, normative and innovative practices related to highway engineering in their different life phases, being operational effects and safe highway design the main topics. The format of the Symposium is: plenary sessions on geometric design issues throughout the world, with podium and poster sessions; country reports featuring recent development in geometric design, policy and practice; technical exhibit of software, design projects and research products and two technical tours of local highway design and construction practices. During the Symposium celebration, a Technical and Commercial Exhibition takes place, where institutions and companies are able to show to the assistants their new methods, solutions, projects, technologies and products.
