A series of slides is presented on how public transport services, particularly bus services, are provided for hospitals in the UK. New hospital developments are moving away from city centre locations, making them more difficult to serve with public transport and resulting in a modal shift towards the private car and a need for car parking. New hospitals provide the opportunity to set up partnerships between the local authority, hospital/health authority and transport operators, which can tackle funding issues for public transport . The scope of such partnerships is considered. The public transport service provided for hospitals in Swindon, Oxford, Brighton,Bath, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare are described. It is concluded that hospitals are important centres of passenger demand, that they are emotive for politicians, that the locations for new development is very limited and that public transport access is a low priority in location decision.
