Some new initiatives have been undertaken in Rome to benefit handicapped people. The first of these is an analysis of the services that handicapped people can use within the historical centre such as parking places, telephones, toilets and accessible public buildings. Another initiative is a specially designed route for the handicapped. Along this route, a number of facilities are provided for handicapped and elderly people in particular. A plan is also being studied to set up a number of information centres. The centres, connected to each other and to a common databank, would be accessed by means of electronic transmitter cards. This experimental project would be extended to a number of other routes through Rome's historical city centre. This system will also be tried out in other Italian cities and if successful would be offered to other cities in Italy and abroad.
