Abstract

This paper reviews the various service options presently employed in the delivery of transit services for people with disabilities across Canada. The paper identifies two varying philosophical approaches (equal rights and effective mobility), to the delivery of these services and how these approaches are tending to meld, as Canadian transit operators seek new methods to cost-effectively provide transit services for Canadians with disabilities. The options discussed include door-to-door services, improved accessibility to conventional transit services, community bus, and fully accessible conventional transit services. The benefits of each, and the reasons for their implementation by specific municipalities, are discussed.
