Current practice in Hungary is described. The details recorded at an accident follow international practice. The data collected by the police are sent to the Local Office of Statistics, followed by the Central Office of Statistics before being made available to the public. Accident site identification is validated by the local Road Directorates. Delays occur in the access to data to protect personal information. The data indicate that traffic safety is poor. Measures taken to improve it include the introduction of a 50 km/h speed limit for urban areas, better illumination of pedestrian crossings, traffic restraint, construction of 500 km of cycle routes up to1992 with a further 243 km planned, improvement of main roads, filling of potholes, and improvement of level crossings. The benefits of road widening were equivocal but this is considered essential to increase road capacity.
