Abstract

In order to reduce the severity of vehicle damage and injury in accidents involving collisions with fixed objects, the FHWA has encouraged the installation of impact attenuators at hazardous locations that otherwise could not be corrected by relocation, redesign, provision of guard rail, or the incorporation of a frangible element for a sign or luminaire support. The field accident data and experience are summarized in this report.
