Abstract

This report, a follow-up to a recent study (See B 12621) presents estimates of annual mileages along with accident and injury rates for a variety of car sizes as well as for a number of specific vehicle makes and models. In addition, failure rates of four inspection items (head-lights, stoplights, footbrakes and tires) for vehicles undergoing periodic motor vehicle inspection are examined. With a few exceptions, the results of the two studies are quite consistent. All accident and injury rates declined with the newer models; as before, small cars generally had higher involvement and injury rates than either full or middle-sized cars.
