Abstract

This paper aims to identify the key factors which determine the accident liabilities of young and novice drivers and to summarise the characteristics of their accidents. Following an opening section (Section 2) in which accident liability is defined and the trends over the last decade are illustrated, the paper reviews the effect of demographic variables (age and gender) on accident liability (Section 3). Section 4 then considers some characteristics of the accidents in which young drivers are involved and Section 5 provides an overview of some factors associated with the accident involved drivers themselves.
