Abstract

A popular approach in to make an intersection safer or to build a safe intersections is to carry out a paired comparison such as before and after study, and a less common method is by comparing the troubled intersection with some similar intersections. There are pros and cons of these methods and they are discussed here together with some issues and an approach which is based on accident prediction models and is believed to be essential in any safety studies at unsignalized intersections or other road segments.
