This paper sets out a comparative study of industrial safety management and road safety management. Industry safety statistics and road fatality rates are compared over a ten-year period. Management structures and models of modern safety management systems are presented as a way of identifying key elements in accident prevention. These range from the prescriptive rules and regulations of the past to the modern focus on safety culture and improved personal behaviour patterns. Problems common to industrial safety and road safety are identified as a means of considering common preventative strategies. Questions are then presented for discussion on what lessons learned in the industrial arena could be applied to road safety, what lessons industry can learn from road safety, and whether there is common ground for industry and road safety groups to move forward together.
