Abstract

Research has identified that the road environment plays a part in 28% of all accidents. It has also established that 70 % of accidents occur in urban areas, most of these on 10 % of the roads, usually at places vhere vehicles stop, accelerate or turn. There is a correlation between high accident rates and low skid resistance. Factors affecting skid resistance are described, together with the inadequacies of conventional surfaces at hazardous sites.
