Abstract

The paper briefly describes the development of a resin/bauxite system which produces a skid resistant surfacing for use at high risk sites. The material and the method of application have been available for more than 20 years and the paper describes the work in London which proved the efficacy of the system as an accident reduction treatment. Details are given of the use of the system throughout the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the world. The U.K. Department of Transport have introduced a programme of accident reduction by means of skid resistance improvements and many of the accident sites to be treated will require the use of the resin/bauxite material. The paper considers probable future increases future increases in road traffic and the effect of this on accidents. The case is argued for greater use of the resin/bauxite system in planned programmes of accident reduction at selected high-risk sites. (A)
